H5P
H5P is a web-based authoring tool that allows you to create interactive learning objects and design rich and engaging online learning activities that include text, images, videos, links, quizzes, adaptive pathways, and more. Examples of H5P content types include multimedia course presentations, interactive videos, drag and drop exercises, flashcards, hotspots, 360-degree tours, branching scenarios, timelines, word clouds, emoji clouds, and multi-player quizzes. Check out a full overview of H5P content types and examples.
H5P objects can easily be shared, reused, copied, and adapted. They can also be embedded into Blackboard with an embed code or inserted using LTI integration (which allows the generation of some data into grade center). While it is currently not recommended to use H5P for graded (summative) assessment, it is great for creating formative exercises and engaging activities that help students practice and apply skills and knowledge at their own pace. Be aware that students do need an internet connection to complete the activities; they cannot download them. Talk to one of our learning designers about using H5P in your teaching. |
Question: But we know that Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington will soon be moving to a new Learning Management System (LMS). Is it still worth learning about and developing content with H5P?
Answer: Yes, absolutely! H5P also works with other learning management systems and integration with H5P is an important factor we have considered during this change process.

H5P Basics
Activate your H5P account
If you have not used H5P.com before, you need to activate your account at vuwcourses.H5P.com (the University's space for H5P content). The easiest way to do this is through Blackboard. If you don't have access to a Blackboard course, you can still use H5P. Please contact a learning designer at CAD to get your account activated.
Add H5P objects to Blackboard
Before you add an H5P object to Blackboard, ask yourself: do you need any data about students' activity in grade center? If you do need data, then you need to use the LTI connection to insert an H5P object. If you don't, then you can simply embed it with the add-content button in Blackboard's editor, or by pasting the H5P embed code in the Blackboard's HTML editor.
H5P.com versus H5P.org
When you look for H5P on the web, you can find H5P.com and H5P.org. They have both been created by the people who developed H5P, and they refer to the same tool. You can also copy content across from one to the other (though H5P.org has file size limits). But there are a few key differences that are worth knowing about.

H5P Key Tips, DOs and DON'Ts
- Always, always, ALWAYS make sure you hit the SAVE button before closing your browser, and save your work regularly. There is NO autosave.
- There is no easy undo if you accidentally delete work (but H5P asks you, "are you sure you want to delete this item?" If in doubt, select cancel and double-check.).
- Instead of trying to replicate a set of PowerPoint slides, or converting a face-to-face activity (e.g. lab), think about the key skills and concepts your students are learning in the course, and then think about the right tools and content types that H5P offers in relation to those skills and concepts.
- Start small to get a feel for how long it takes to create an activity. You can always copy smaller activities into more complex ones later one.
- Spend time planning and storyboarding, especially for complex activities such as branching scenarios.
