Communication Quick Tips
- Make sure your students know when and how they can get in touch with you.
- If possible, be consistent with the days and times you are available.
- Consider referring students to your office hours if they ask substantial or complex questions via email (or elsewhere). This can help you to save time by not typing responses back and forwards multiple times, as well as giving the student a more personal and comprehensive response.
At VUW, tutors are often required to run regular office hours in order to be available to meet with individual or groups of students who have questions, or who would just like to chat with someone about the course and their studies.
Virtual office hours
You might like to consider offering a virtual office hour. The great thing about virtual office hours is that they can take place regardless of whether or not you and your students are on campus.
Zoom is a useful tool for running virtual office hours.
Quick tip: if you are running your office hours via Zoom, consider using the waiting room feature. This will mean that you can control who enters the discussion, and when.

Well-being & Covid-19
As tutors, we are often the main and most regular point of contact for students. As we continue to face changing and challenging circumstances, you may encounter students who are in need of extra support. Below is some information about the health and well-being services that are available through the university, which you can recommend to students as appropriate. It is also important to prioritise your own health and well-being, especially during these busy times.
If you are required to adapt your tutoring during various Covid-19 alert levels, our information about Delivering Tutorials Online (or Mixed-Mode) is a good place to start.
Mauri Ora – the university’s Student Health facility – is a service available to all VUW students. Should you or one of your students need to talk to someone, or to access other forms of health and well-being support, their services operate on campus and/or remotely depending on the current Covid-19 alert level.
For information about how to access these services during the Covid-19 outbreak, visit Mauri Ora’s Covid-19 appointments and services page.
Remember: if you become unwell in any way, make sure to let your course coordinator and/or head tutor know as soon as possible so that they can make any necessary arrangements from their end. Take it easy, and look after yourself and each other!
