Recording In Class
This page provides guidance for recording in class using Panopto. We cover how to set up the recording, things to remember while you are recording your teaching, controlling what gets recorded, and what to do if you run into an issue.
Panopto software can be used to record lectures while they are presented live in class. There are flexible ways to achieve this, although where possible, we recommend scheduling automatic lecture recordings for your course. For instructions on setting up automatic recordings, see our page on Scheduling Automatic Lecture Recordings.
Need to know how to access your video after it has been recorded? See our Managing Your Videos page.
Setting up the recording
Recording and streaming in class
Recording: get a recording of your session by scheduling an automatic lecture recording. If you need to manually record a session, see the instructions below.
Streaming: streaming can be achieved using Panopto Webcast or it can be done via Zoom. The Panopto Webcast is not a two-way communication with students, they are simply watching and listening live. For a more engaging and interactive stream, Zoom is preferable.

How to schedule automatic recordings

How to manually record teaching in seminar or lecture rooms
On the lectern computer log into your Blackboard course and open the VStream videos link, click on the Create button and then select Panopto Capture.
For step-by step guides on recording a video to VStream with Panopto Capture, please take a look at Panopto's 'How to Create a Video Using Panopto Capture' page.

- with ad hoc recording (note: saves in a Panopto folder that only system admin can access)
- Select the Start New Recording option and confirm that you want to record.
- Stop the recording at the end of your session by clicking on the Panopto software icon again and selecting Stop.
Important: ad hoc Panopto recordings are not ideal because you cannot directly access your recording. You will need to log a call via the Staff Service Centre to request the recording be copied into your Panopto folder(s). Wherever possible, schedule your recording to happen automatically.
If you have Zoom set up for teaching, you may prefer to record your session via a Zoom meeting. If so, remember to share your screen on Zoom so that your material on the lecture theatre screen gets recorded.
Things to remember in the teaching space
When recording your teaching in a lecture theatre or seminar room please remember these key things:
- Always make sure the microphones are turned on and use a lapel microphone if possible. For lecture recordings, sound is the most important element.
- Automatic recordings should capture all screens in the room if the computer is set to extended/split screen mode.
- If using an external device such as a document camera or laptop connected via cable, make sure this device is displayed in the room on the left hand monitor (right in Te Aro campus). This is the monitor that shows the task-bar and windows start button. You can have any other software or application showing on other screen/s.
- By default there is no camera capturing video so feel free to walk around but your physical movements are not captured.
- Please be aware of when the recording is due to start and stop and make sure conversations with students at the lectern, before and after class, are not captured on the microphones.
- Let your students know you are recording the lecture (if you haven't done this previously) and tell them how and when the recordings will be made available on Blackboard.
Controlling the recording
Recording settings: What gets recorded
By default, scheduled recordings capture the screens in the room and an audio feed from the microphones in the room. Where there is more than one screen, all screens will be recorded.
Screens

Screens
- A laptop screen will get captured if the laptop is plugged in to the lectern and is displayed on the main screen for the room.
- If you use a document camera in the room and display this on the main screen it will get captured as well.
- If you need to use a laptop and document camera then you can read the attached documents or talk to your CAD adviser about setting up for this scenario.
- Mac users should note that some HDMI adapters will not work with the recorders. If you are experiencing problems with your recordings you can try using Zoom as an alternative to a physical cable.
- By default, there is no video camera capturing the presenter in the room.
- The option to have a video feed from the room (as well as the screen capture and audio) has been removed in most teaching rooms. This is because the value of the video feed was found to be unsubstantial in comparison to the added complexity and potential for errors associated with the video.
- When you have a microphone turned on, that audio will be recorded.
- Remember when the microphones are on/off and make sure you don't have any private conversations with students before or after the lecture near the lectern or whilst wearing a lapel microphone.
- Please make sure all microphone units (lapel and handheld) are switched off when you leave the room.

Manually stopping and pausing a recording
Pause the recording or stop it early:
Both 'Pause' and 'Stop' can be accessed by clicking on the Panopto icon in the bottom taskbar and selecting stop/pause. If you finish your class early you can stop your automatic recording manually. Alternatively, if there is sensitive content in the middle of a lecture you can select pause to hide the section of the recording.

There are two ways to prevent a recording from happening at all:
- Delete the scheduled recording instance from the course folder. See instructions above about how to check your scheduled recordings. Select the specific recording instance you want to remove and click Delete button (Bin icon).
- When you walk into the class and you see that recording has started, indicated by the Panopto icon with a red dot in the computer taskbar bottom right of the screen, you can click on the icon and select stop recording.
The recording symbol
If a recording is happening in a room, you will see the Panopto logo (green hexagon) in the bottom right taskbar with a red dot on it indicating recording.
If the Panopto logo has a yellow triangle, it means there is a warning that something is preventing the recording. Please call 5475 to ask Digital Solutions for immediate AV support.

Issues with your recording?
Sometimes technical issues occur with the recording system, the classroom computer or the microphones. There may be instances where recordings fail in some way. In some instances we can recover content, but sometimes it is not possible to recover the recording.
- If you become aware of an issue with the recording while it is taking place, please call 5475 from the room (there might be a phone in the lectern) and Digital Solutions will respond.
- If you notice a problem with a recording after teaching time, please log a call via the Staff Service Centre for investigation.
